Daughter of current Cuban President Raúl Castro to participate in The Havana Dialogues
Kitchener, ON – THEMUSEUM is excited to welcome Dr. Mariela Castro Espin to both THEMUSEUM and downtown Kitchener for her lecture on Monday, November 23 at 6:45pm. Her lecture, which is part of The Havana Dialogues, is titled Raising LGBTQ Awareness Through Art. In Cuba, Castro Espin has been instrumental in using art to educate the public about LGBTQ issues.
“I am an advocate for sex education in Cuba, and have been working towards creating positive change for almost thirty years,” said Castro Espin, Director of the Cuban National Center for Sex Education. “I am excited to meet with the LGBTQ community in Waterloo Region and share stories. Cuba is more than just a tourist destination, and I will be sharing my insight and knowledge about the country’s people.”
Castro Espin is also an active member of the National Committee of the Federation of Cuban Women, and chairs the specialized magazine, Sexología y Sociedad (Sexology and Society). She is also the President of the National Commission for the Comprehensive Care of Transsexual People, and sits on numerous international committees relating to gender and sexual health.
“We are excited and honoured to welcome Dr. Castro Espin to THEMUSEUM as part of The Havana Dialogues,” said David Marskell, CEO of THEMUSEUM. “We strive to provide fresh, cultural content from around the world, and this event is a perfect example of the unique programming that makes THEMUSEUM the cultural hub of southwestern Ontario.”
Castro Espin is also meeting with members of the local LGBTQ community before her lecture, at 5:30pm, for more in-depth discussions and a private reception. The reception is free to those who RSVP to DrCastroEspin@THEMUSEUM.ca. More information, as well as general admission tickets for the 6:45pm talk ($8.00+HST each), can be found online at www.THEMUSEUM.ca.
