Terry Fox Marathon of Hope van coming to Waterloo to be displayed at Conestoga Mall
THEMUSEUM adds iconic van to Terry Fox – Running to the Heart of Canada exhibition
Kitchener, ON – THEMUSEUM in downtown Kitchener is proud to announce it has negotiated to add the iconic Ford E250 Econoline van that travelled with Terry Fox during his143-day Marathon of Hope to its current exhibition Terry Fox – Running to the Heart of Canada. However with a twist.
The van, owned by the Fox Family, will be on display, free of charge, but not at THEMUSEUM. It will be on display at Conestoga Mall in Waterloo beginning Tuesday, May 3 for the entire month.
“One strategy of THEMUSEUM is to take THEMUSEUM out of its physical setting and this is a perfect opportunity to showcase part of this exhibition in a public space,” said David Marskell, CEO of THEMUSEUM. “The van is an inspiring artifact, and helps preserve Terry Fox the legacy and his Marathon of Hope. It will awe, inspire and enlighten mall goers and we want as many people as possible to experience it.”
“We are beyond excited and honoured to be showcasing this Canadian artifact,” said Sandra Stone, General Manager of Conestoga Mall. “It showcases the legacy of a national hero, and will be a great addition to Conestoga Mall for shoppers to see and learn about.”
The van, normally housed at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, will be on display in Waterloo, and complement the larger exhibition that is currently on display at THEMUSEUM.
“What a delight it is to have this important symbol of hope in Waterloo,” said Dave Jaworsky, Mayor of Waterloo. “This van, along with the exhibition in Kitchener, reminds us of the courage of this young man and the pride and hope he instilled in our nation.”
After being used for Terry’s Marathon of Hope, the van was given back to Ford (which had originally loaned it), and used by families for camping trips; it also acted as a tour van for a Vancouver-based band. The Terry Fox Family bought the van back in 2007 and had it restored.
The main exhibition, Terry Fox – Running to the Heart of Canada, will be on display at THEMUSEUM until Thursday, June 16, 2016.
